Sustainable reconstruction of Returpack trucks into RCV trucks
JOAB's service workshop in Blomstermåla has recently carried out several innovative projects where old Returpack trucks have been rebuilt into fully functional RCV trucks, which has enabled new assignments for our customers while contributing to a more sustainable production.
One of the first projects was for Mikael Lood's transportation company in Eskilstuna. Mikael had two Returpack trucks that were unused and was considering selling them to be able to take on new assignments. Instead, JOAB suggested rebuilding his existing cars, which would save both time and resources. The core of the project is sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources – ie not scrapping the vehicle and buying a brand new one, but instead modifying and rebuilding it so that it can continue to be functional for the customer.
"By reusing much of the existing electronics and other components, we were able to streamline the process and reduce the need for new materials" - says Johan Karlsson, site and regional manager in Blomstermåla.
After careful consideration and technical adjustments, we were able to adapt the bottom of the waste cabinets and modify the units to suit the new needs. The project meant that we reused around 400 different components, including sheet metal, electrical items and hydraulic components. The result was two converted RCV trucks that were delivered just after the summer holidays.
This success has led to more customers, such as Olsson's in Landskrona, choosing to follow the same concept. JOAB has already delivered a rebuilt truck to them and another one is on the way. By reusing and adapting existing vehicles, we can help our customers quickly adapt to new assignments and at the same time reduce their environmental impact.
We are also seeing increased demand for sustainable reconstructions of rear-loading twin RCV trucks to handle shared bins, which is particularly relevant now that on-site collection is becoming more common. Our flexible adaptation enables our customers to maximize the use of their existing vehicles and quickly adapt to new assignments, while together we contribute to a more sustainable future.
This is a concrete example of how we work with the UN's global goal number 12 - read more about our sustainability work here.
